A Little Taste of Europe in Fredericksburg: Calivence
One of my favorite parts of welcoming you to Barons CreekSide is sharing places I think you’ll enjoy while you’re here. My newest recommendation? Calivence, right on Main Street. Being Swiss, I have a soft spot for an afternoon that turns into an evening over good food, wine, and conversation. If that sounds like your kind of vacation, put this one on your list.
A European Invitation to Slow Down
Calivence serves French-inspired cuisine in an 1869 limestone house at 419 West Main Street. It’s a lovely combination for Fredericksburg: a historic Texas setting with a European approach to the table. There are wines from the family’s California estate alongside selections from France, and room in your plans for a leisurely lunch or dinner.
A Few Things to Tempt You Start with something for the table. The mussels arrive in a garlicky broth made with white wine, with toasted bread for dipping. Or choose oysters served freshly shucked. For a late lunch, consider the Croque Monsieur, a French café classic combining ham, Gruyère, and béchamel on brioche. The warm goat cheese salad offers another appealing option, with apple and almonds.
For dinner, there’s salmon over smooth potatoes with a creamy tarragon sauce, or Texas beef accompanied by bordelaise and carrots. And leave a little room for crème brûlée.
